Make the most of this in-between season—before college begins.

You’ve put in the work—navigating college applications, celebrating acceptance letters, and finalizing your financial aid. Now summer has arrived, and with it, a chance to finally breathe. But this isn’t just any summer. It’s your last one before a huge life transition. In a few short months, everything familiar will shift—your routines, your surroundings, your support system.

That’s why this summer matters so much. It’s a unique window of time to reconnect, reflect, and enjoy the people and places that have shaped your journey so far. You won’t get this exact season again—so make it count.

1. Spend Quality Time with Family

Even if you’re itching for independence, your family likely played a big role in getting you to this point. This summer, try to be intentional with them. That could look like lingering at the dinner table a little longer, offering to cook a meal together, or helping with everyday chores. These moments—though they may seem ordinary—become meaningful memories once you're living away from home.

Whether it's your parents, grandparents, siblings, or extended relatives, show up with presence. Have that late-night conversation with your mom. Go on a walk with your dad. Visit your grandma for a Sunday afternoon chat. These little acts of closeness go a long way in helping everyone feel grounded before the big change.

2. Make Time for Friends—Old and New

You and your high school friends may be scattering in different directions come fall, which makes this summer your last true season of being together in the same place. Make it special. Plan a weekend getaway or start a weekly hangout tradition. You don’t have to spend a ton of money to make it meaningful—a beach day, movie marathon, or homemade dinner can be just as memorable.

At the same time, if you’ve met future classmates online or during orientation, take small steps to build those connections now. A simple DM or video call can ease nerves and create a friendly face before you even get to campus. Balancing your time between old and new friendships is a great way to close one chapter while beginning another.

3. Take a Break (Seriously)

Senior year is exhausting. Between classes, college decisions, and extracurriculars, your brain and body are likely overdue for a recharge. Allow yourself to rest—without guilt. Sleep in a little. Go outside without an agenda. Read for fun. Watch your favorite comfort shows. Slow down.

This is your opportunity to reset before diving into the academic and social whirlwind of college. Giving yourself space to relax, reflect, and feel at ease will help you enter this next phase with a healthier mindset. Rest isn’t wasted time—it’s essential preparation.

4. Capture the Ordinary

The little things you don’t think about now might be what you miss most later. The view from your bedroom window, the smell of your favorite local bakery, your pet’s quirky habits—these details make up the fabric of home. Take photos or short videos. Write down memories or things you love about your routine. Create a memory playlist of songs that remind you of this time.

These ordinary moments might not seem important now, but when homesickness hits—or when you’re just feeling nostalgic—they’ll be a comfort. Preserving these memories helps keep a sense of home with you, even when you’re far away.

5. Knock Out Some Adulting Basics

Summer is also a great time to start building some independence. Take a few hours to learn things like how to do your own laundry, cook a few basic meals, or set up mobile banking. Practice creating a budget or tracking your spending for a week. Learn how to make a doctor’s appointment or refill a prescription.

These aren’t glamorous skills, but they’ll make college life smoother. Knowing how to handle your own needs gives you confidence and reduces stress. You don’t need to master everything before you leave, but becoming a little more self-sufficient will help you feel prepared and capable.

6. Say Thank You

Before you move on to this next chapter, take a moment to express gratitude. Think about the people who’ve helped you—teachers, mentors, coaches, neighbors, or family friends. A handwritten note, a thoughtful text, or even a small gift can go a long way. It’s a chance to recognize their role in your journey and to say goodbye in a meaningful way.

Saying thank you is more than just good manners—it’s a way to reflect on how much support you’ve received and to leave your community with a sense of appreciation. Plus, it reminds you that you’re not heading into this next season alone—you’re carrying the encouragement of those who believe in you.

7. Start Dreaming Ahead

While you’re grounded in this present moment, it’s also exciting to start thinking about the future. Take time to imagine the kind of student you want to be. What habits do you want to build? What passions are you excited to explore? How do you want to grow—not just academically, but personally?

Journaling, creating a vision board, or talking with a trusted mentor can help clarify your goals. Setting intentions now doesn’t mean you need to have it all figured out—but it does give you a sense of direction as you step into a season of so much change.
